Brazilian Tattooist Frank Carrilho, works for the Portuguese tattoo parlour called Queen of Hearts Tattoos, in Lisbon, creates stunning tattoos that fuse delicate, wispy details with dramatic, bold outlines.
“So that’s why I say I have no rules, because I have so much freedom, and I have no rules with needles, too. [This way,] I can put different effects in my tattoo—it’s more like sketching. [. . .] And people have different ways of sketching. When you’re learning how to draw, you have some rules. But over time you change—you find your own way to do it. And this doesn’t mean it’s better or less better than the original process. But that’s why I say I have no rules: because I find my own way, and I do my own way.”
Carrilho uses straight lines, black ink, and stippling to create designs that look half-sketched and half drawn, letting you catch a glimpse of the geometric forms that serve as any artist’s basic building blocks.
After working as an apprentice from 2008 to 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Carrilho began his professional career, spending time at several studios to improve his craft. In 2012, he tried his hand at opening his own tattoo shop; as of 2015, he’s affiliated with the studio “Queen Of Hearts Tattoos,” in Lisbon, Portugal.
